    Life of Pi

This is a remarkable film on many levels. First, it has a remarkable plot, courtesy of Yann Martel's book and David Magee's screenplay. Essentially an extremely powerful voyage of self-discovery, with strong religious overtones, with Pi voyaging through Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam, and then a life-threatening shipwreck. Second, this film would have failed miserably without the powerful performance of Suraj Sharma as Pi, and also those of Irrfan Khan as the adult Pi and Rafe Spall as the writer interviewing him... Third, Ang Lee's direction was critical to bringing to life a story with such powerful philosophical and psychological overtones. Fourth, the computer-generated 3-D backgrounds and animation are -- awesome!! The ocean scenes would have made me sick except that the 3-D window was small enough that I retained an outside reference."Avatar"; move over; you have a worthy peer! All of these aspects deserve Oscars. The Best Film Oscar would also not be unwarranted, except that this film is not your typical smash-bang melodrama; it is far too profound and introspective. Go!! See it!! Good films leave a lasting impression, and I believe this one does.
