Machuca is a coming of age story, but not likely one you have experienced before. It allows you to witness life during the 1973 bloody coup in Chile through the eyes of of two 12 year old boys from total opposite ends of society. The politics that tears their world apart is well documented by history, one of the worst periods for the South American country. Machuca was the Chilean film to be submitted to the Academy Awards of Arts and Sciences for Best Foreign Film. Though this political parable is a sharp drama of very different individuals, what it does best is show childhood as both a most special time, but one that can suddenly be overtaken by terrifying cruelty, a horror they can't totally comprehend.
