    Miracle on 34th Street

The 1947 version of "Miracle on 34th Street" is a very sweet Christmas film that will definitely get you in the holiday spirit. It even has a lot more going on than just a whimsical story about a controversial man who claims to be Santa Claus. When the Macy's Day Parade finds itself without a Santa Claus, a man named Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn, who looks the part to perfection) volunteers, much to the relief of the event director Doris Walker (Maureen O'Hara) The man does a great job, but appears to be convinced that he is the real Santa Claus. He is nevertheless hired at the Macy's on 34th street, until an incident finds him in on trial. Doris' attorney neighbour Fred (John Payne) volunteers to defend him. The film follows the case, where just as much tension comes from the final verdict as from the question of whether or not Doris' young daughter Susan (Natalie Wood) will believe herself that there is a real Santa Claus.

The characters are likeable and fun (even the "villain" of the film has his charms), the casting is pitch perfect and the performances are excellent. The film really has that "Christmas magic" that so many films try to create without an ounce of cynicism and without becoming too syrupy. As the plot unfold, everything just sort of falls into place conveniently, but not in a way that's unbelievable and because a large part of the film is dedicated to the belief in the impossible, it's really up to you to determine how and why everything happens the way it does. Myself, I totally buy into the magic of Christmas and hold this as one of the best examples of a film where it's ok to have "magic" without explanation. It's also got some very funny moments and it's a great family film in the sense that it's about a family but also enjoyable for the young and old. Even if it wasn't already, I'd call this a must-see for the Christmas holidays."Miracle on 34th Street" will generate warm reactions out of you, regardless of your feelings about Santa Claus.
