    Molière à bicyclette

MOLIERE being my thesis in my long Graduate Studies offered me a particular delight that I think is quite unique. Being so familiar with material can actually pose a problem in accepting a film on one's literary idol. However, there was not one iota of this as the film was so deliciously appetizing!

The actors are perfect in their delivery of Molière's stunning alexandrine lines of incomparable beauty, lines of a richness in the embodiment of what Shakespeare did for English drama and comedy. Particularly outstanding is Franco/Italian actor Fabrice Luchini. As stated by so many others, this is a feature that truly requires one to know French and in a more particular way, Molière, to receive the entire scope of what the film is purporting to do. Sub-titles in this case are nothing more than a detriment or hindrance in viewing this visually and auditory stunning film as it's virtually impossible to get the benefit of the screenplay let alone Molière's own immortal lines by reading imprecise English sentences at the bottom of the screen. The bicycle in the title becomes little more than a type of framework to get the proceedings on the road. This is a film intended for a fairly special, rare audience. It is as far removed from mainstream cinéma as one can possibly get! I'd love to get some punk worshiper of garbage American Film to suffer just a bit in viewing this classic, then letting him know that this is what BEAUTY in cinéma is all about!
