    Monster Brawl

"Monster Brawl" is a low budget independent horror comedy with a lot of enthusiasm. It's packed wall-to-wall with high-energy commentary, bad puns (of course!), cleverly inserted jokes (so subtle you'll have to rewind the DVD a couple of times to be able to read them all), gore and some fun monster designs.

There’s only a loose plot here. It’s just an excuse to get the combatants in an arena fighting to the death. While Buzz Chambers (Dave Foley) and Sasquatch Side (Art Hindle) inform the audience of everything they need to know about the origin and abilities of the monsters, we witness the two classes duke it out. There’s the “Creature” class with a Cyclops, a Werewolf, a Witch and a Gill Man/Swamp Thing guy. Then there’s the “Undead” class with a Mummy, Frankenstein Monster, Vampire lady and Zombie. It’s ridiculous but you knew that coming in!

With crowd favourites like Werewolf (R. J. Skinner) and “Frankenstein" (Robert Maillet) battling not so favourites "Witch Bitch" (Holly Letkeman) and "Swamp Gut" (Jason David Brown) the film delivers exactly what it promises. Monsters fight to a bloody death in a cheesy wrestling-style arena. There’s no substance but I didn’t mind because you can see the love on the screen. Some of the short story lines/character origins could have been fleshed out bit better and like many independent movies this one could have used a bigger budget. Most monsters look pretty good, but the Cyclops looks downright awful. He doesn’t even fit in this line-up at all. We’ve got a mythological “giant” tossed in with literary and film-based characters? They should’ve put Quasimodo instead, or some kind of Fly-Man. At least it makes it easy to choose who you want to applaud for.

Despite the limitations, it's tons of fun and if you've ever wondered yourself who would win between a vampire and a mummy or if you're a fan of wrestling, this is likely to be right up your alley. (On DVD, July 10, 2012)
