I was pleasantly surprised at the superb acting in this well-written movie. Not only was the writing and acting outstanding, but the special effects were not in the way of, or distracting from, the story. "Oblivion" was surprisingly thought-provoking, too, as all good science fiction must be. Its questions about the relations between men and machines and the nature of the human soul put it in the same class as Kubrick's "2001, A Space Odyssey". Cruise and Freeman were only mediocre, but the WOMEN in this film were extraordinary! They made the movie work and they made it work WELL. The beautiful Russian girl has the rare abiity to move you with a change of facial expression; I haven't seen the like since Michelle Pfeiffer. And finally, I did not expect either the romantic element(s) of the story or that they were so well done as to move an old cynic like me. This film is underrated; it's easily one of the best of this year so far.
