One mainstream review I read was really negative and James Franco predicted that reviewers were going to go after him and the film. He was right but I think the reviews here better express the film's worth. I really disliked Tim Burton's ape movie (his story telling is often second to this visuals) but this ape movie had a better explanation regarding the ape's evolution, etc., than even the original series. The CGI was terrific and the film succeeded where it needed to; you really care about those CGI apes. I suppose there is an ecological point here; if we keep messing w/nature, destroying species and habitats, nature will bite humanity and hard. (How did that mainstream review miss this?) While not a supeb movie it was good entertainment and more engaging than some of the big movies so far this summer. Again, I note that this film like some others this summer is greatly helped by really good performances by supporting actors, in this case Brian Cox--and that CGI orangutang.
