    Snow White and the Huntsman

There's a lot of "hit" and a lot of "misses" in "Snow White and the Huntsman". For me, there’s just enough that works that I can recommend it.

When Snow White (played as an adult by Kristen Stewart) discovers that her stepmother Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) has murdered the king, taken over the kingdom and that she’s next, she escapes from her prison. Joining forces with Eric, the titular Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and a group of grudge-holding dwarves, they set out to topple the evil Queen’s rule and instate Snow White as the rightful ruler of the land.

It's a beautiful film to look at, with excellent costumes, creature and set designs. Several shots are brilliantly filmed. I think the score is great too. On the other hand there is a lot of stilted dialogue and bad acting, particularly towards the end. The lackluster performances come mostly from the bad script; even good actors can't make something out nothing. Several characters are cliché and amount to little despite showing promise in the beginning. A good example is the evil Queen's brother Finn (Sam Spruell.) You think his character is going to suddenly betray the Queen when he has a change of heart, or that there’s going to be some kind of revelation about him, but he’s just a random slimy thug. He does not get a lot of character development or depth.

What “SW&H” needed was an editor that could make some tough decisions and streamline this a bit. Some scenes, while nice, belong on the "extended cut" when the movie is released on home video. There, already established fans could get more what they already like. Here, they prevent the film from actually earning itself fans. If you're a visual person or if you're already sold on the premise of a darker takes on fairy tales, you'll have a good time, otherwise it's nothing special. (Theatrical Cut, June 30, 2012)
