    Some Like It Hot

One of the best ever written comedies by German born Billy Wilder and his partner, perfectly directed by Mr. Wilder who was better known for drama and film noir. Nevertheless, Wilder's brilliant direction of an almost screw-ball comedy earned him an Oscar Nomination for 1959. In keeping with the gangster theme of the film, 'Some LIke It Hot' was sensibly filmed in gorgeous B & W which makes the film more authentic of its time period and what was being parodied. Marilyn, Tony and Jack give career defining performances, each so brilliant that it was hardly fair that Jack Lemmon alone was nominated for an Oscar. Tony Curtis's performance and his Cary Grant impression will ever live on in memory. As for Marilyn it was a crime that the Academy again took no notice of her, first with 'BUSTOP' in 1956 and for 1959's 'Some Like it Hot'! Orry-Kelly took home an Oscar for his fabulous designs for Marilyn and the frumpy designs for Josephine and Daphne! This truly classic, funny comedy can be viewed countless times never becoming a drag or a bore. It was a great move on Wilder's part to cast some big name stars from the thirties in supporting roles: Joe E. Brown, George Raft and Pat O'Brian all giving wonderfully engaging supporting or cameo roles. Wilder went on to direct his serious comedy 'The Apartment' which won best film and direction of 1960, but of the later comedies, none come close to the brilliance of 'Some Like It Hot'.
