The great Geraldine Page ( ALMA ) gives one of her most nuanced performances in this Tennessee Williams drama for which she was Oscar Nominated in 1961 but lost to Sofia Loren. It's impossible to fully describe the depth of her spinsterish ways yet the love she carries in her heart, from girlhood, for John, a medic to be, played brilliantly by the immensely talented Laurence Harvey. Veteran UNA MERKEL, also in an Oscar Nominated performance as Alma's deranged mother, gives the best performance EVER of her long career. This is WILLIAMS so don't expect chocolates or roses. It's brutal, trecherous and unforgiving most of the time with twists and turns that will boggle your mind. YOU WON'T BELIEVE THE ENDING OF WHAT I DEFINITELY CALL A TRAGEDY of the human spirit!
To Quote Alma: "The tables have turned; the tables have turned with a terrible vengeance."
There is so much happening in this lurid tale it's almost difficult to fully absorb. And this is a period piece from early on in the 20th century as Williams wrote it. It proves one thing: Human Nature has always been a bit of a monster and it still is. THIS IS A FILM YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO MISS!
