This is a mixed bag; this is. On the plus side, the film presents a good primer on the history of the American Civil Rights movement. But, The film's White House scenes are flat like stale beer and some of these scenes are down-right risible. What nearly sinks the movie are the cameos by fairly prominent actors appearing as the presidents. They are all coated in latex and plastic and make-up (Robin Williams as Dwight Eisenhower! John Cussack as Nixon-with prosthetic nose... Alan Rickman as Reagan!) Forest Whitaker delivers a fine nuanced performance as the title character. The movie comes alive when the butler is at home dealing with the family disagreements. Oprah Winfrey is a powerhouse as the hard-drinking, cheatin' wife. Considering the infrequency of her screen appearances her acting is peerless. And, she's been somewhat busy during the last few years.
