Cliff Curtis is a great character actor first time I saw him was in Once Were Warriors a 1994 a New Zealand drama film. (was born in Rotorua, New Zealand, on July 27, 1968. He is of New Zealand Maori descent (with Ngati Hauiti and Te Arawa tribal affiliations), first time I saw him was in Once Were Warriors a 1994 a New Zealand drama film. DARK HORSE (2014) (New Zealand drama film written and directed by James Napier) A brilliant BIPOLAR New Zealand chess champion 'Genesis' played by Cliff Curtis whose aim in life is to leave a legacy of hiss chess knowledge to the children in his community not without fierce competition. In spite of his personal shortcomings his focus is all there and he never loses it. He is a man in a mission, played against all odds. The acting and cinematography are superb. His calm demeanor is that of the pieces in a chess board, calculated to succeed, he is the King of this drama, (story inspired by real-life Gisborne speed chess player and coach Genesis Potini, who died in 2011) He is a man with a pure soul, a father, a guide, a leader, a light in the shadows of men, and it is this light that guides the new social elements to a clean slate of fate with a goal to achieve, he is a cleanser, a sorcerer of sorts, sturdy and able to endure all the pain carrying that cross (He plays Jesus in Risen 2016) He becomes our hero like Dark Horse coming out of the shadows and leading the pack.
