Great film adaptation of the true life story of John Merrick, the deformed Elephant Man which originated in the West End and on Broadway. John Hurt, of course, is unrecognizable as the grotesque, 19th Century man with Proteus Syndrome. Anthony Hopkins, in an early film role, is the wonderful doctor who takes him under his wing while Anne Bancroft is the upper crust woman who visits him in hospital and makes him feel like a regular gent of the era... so much so that even aristocracy were in the habit of visiting and befriending this lonely, sad specimen of humankind. A very touching film!
