    The Pianist

A well crafted picture depicting the torture of Polish Jews in the Warsaw getto during Nazi occupation. The story revolves around one young man 'Szpilman' whose incredible musical talent manages to save his life and sustain his will to survive during many harrowing occasions over the long drawn out occupation. The film pulls no punches when it comes to the depiction of the Nazis has cruel and ruthless. Some scenes are truly difficult to watch yet one gets the impression that this is only a taste of what it was like in the getto. Nor does the film fail to portray the inhumanity of some Jews towards their own kind, specifically in the depiction of the Jewish police as only one example. But in the end, I think the films main message is that the music that Szpilman can produce from his instrument is perhaps the greatest measure of mans humanity and that the human need to create and sustain beauty and grace will eventually out distance ignorance, greed and hate. For that, I rate this picture a near masterpiece that one should try hard to see.
