L'Attesa, the debut film of Piero Messina is derived from a Pirandello play from the 1920's (in an updated version.) The film opens on a sombre note as a funeral is in progress and it's hard to move beyond that point. Sicily at Easter time is gorgeous, the acting is impeccable (Juliette Binoche and Lou de Laage) but we keep waiting for something that never seems to happen. It appears that life at this particular point in time turns into some type of ghost story that never quite materializes.
