This crowd pleasing coming-of-ager omits the usual gross horny teenager route in favour of the problems faced by one socially challenged 14-year old who learns confidence under the wing of a wise older man with a heart of gold underneath the happy-go-lucky exterior. Long under-rated Sam Rockwell scores as the mentor and Liam James Is wonderful as the initially sour youth who has been bullied by his over-bearing possible step-father (Steve Carell; amazingly cast against type) Amusing line: Allison Janney complains that her neighbour called her a cu-next-Tuesday; if you catch the drift. Highly recommended except for cynics. You will leave the theatre with a smile on your face.
