In 'White Heat' (1949) the versatile James Cagney plays one of the most evil characters of his career. Cody (Cagney) is a sociopath killer, ruthless as they come with the added bonus of being a mamma's boy. Director Raoul Walsh creates a truly great gangster film that make Cagney's earlier gangster roles seem like 'comedies', so to speak. His moll is Virginia Mayo who gets high marks from me as does the fabulous character actor Margaret Wycherly who plays his loving, self-indulgent mother. The film starts on a high and maintains its momentum throughout till a climax that will blow your mind. You will be on the edge of your seat throughout. It's important to note how influential this film was in so many gangster films that were to come. I was shocked that Cagney was not nominated for an Oscar for this indelible performance. It's incredulous. A very great film with a performance that will knock your socks off. ABSOLUTE MUST SEE FILM!!!
