American Ultra is trying to be so many different things, that it never really works as any of them. A blend of a stoner, relationship, dramady, with a violent, Bourne-type, action movie doesn't even sound good when you write it down. So it should come as no surprise then that it doesn't really work on screen either. Jesse Eisenberg and particularly, Kristen Stewart, are both immensely, likeable talents. But this film never sits still long enough, or takes things seriously enough, to really give their characters any depth. So the comedy/romance is shortchanged by the constant, violent action, which itself, isn't really that well done either. It amounts to mediocrity interrupted by mediocrity much of the time, despite the natural screen charisma of it's two stars and a few humorous, moments.
