I just saw " Before You Know It " on DVD a few days ago. I felt let down by the documentary which I thought would be a truly touching portrait on being gay and aging in America. The older gay community does not fare too well in my eyes by what is shown here. This is hardly a true reflection on the trauma and hardships I believed would be depicted. There is an immense stress on "trans" persons, some cross-dressing and other dudes who appear to never have matured though well into their seventies. Sorry to say I found this doc sad and pathetic to a large degree. The documentarian did precious little service to anyone by the approach taken in this feature. It should and could have been something remarkable! It is NOT! I doubt this doc is truly representative of older gay men. It lacked a serious tone and most definitely a broader cross-section of older gay males. I felt a tinge of pity for those leading such a meaningless lifestyle! The film was mediocre at best as it kept repeating material that held very little interest for me.
