I always attend a Woody Allen movie with great anticipation, however with Blue Jasmine my great expectations were severely dashed within the first ten minutes. This black comedy/drama channels A Streetcar Named Desire mixed with a Bernie Madoff-type financial scandal with the great Cate Blanchette in the Blanche Dubois role (She played it on Broadway) There is no doubt that hers is a marvellous performance, BUT the movie is an exercise in relentless misery. It's an out and out downer. Blanchette portrays Blanche Dubois' insanity to the power of ten. Every other character is a real study in misery and the laughs are few and somewhat strained. Only Alec Baldwin's scheming, philandering husband is of some interest. His claim to be in love with a teenaged au-pair gives us some hilarity. This is an all-too cynical film made by a sour, misanthropic old man who doesn't care any more. Woody Allen has lost his mojo.
