You had to read the book first in order to understand everything fully, otherwise you won't understand that that's the point - it is a shabby Place because it's a breaking-down city, and it's all about miners because those are the people that help keep it going. Childhood favourite book, so biased towards the movie not doing it justice.
I have nothing against the book :) I think its an interesting plot but the movie is boring and decorations and effects suck. Don't expect me to like all the movies regardless how boring they are just because they are based on children fave books.
