A valiant attempt to transfer a wonderful thought-provoking novel to the screen. As always, the screenwriters are caught between trying to perpetuate the book's plot line while also condensing the story into a cohesive series of visual vignettes, a series that must, paradoxically, include some of the more visually vivid but otherwise irrelevant episodes from the book. Not completely successful. Still, an excellent film with an important message. The importance of this film is emphasized, in my view, by the fact that the producers were able to get heavyweights like Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley to sign on. And Asa Butterfield is excellent in the title role. In my view, this film could have been better, but I suspect that there are as many opinions on how to accomplish this as there are viewers!
