I knew nothing about this film going in. I hadn't read the book The Double on which it is based, nor had I heard anything about it. I was sold purely on the director/star combo of Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal whose last film Prisoners I absolutely loved. So I'm not ashamed to say that I'm not entirely sure I got what the hell was going on? The film's plot unfolds in an unsettling and Lynchian fashion, deliberately keeping the audience at a distance. A history professor sees his literal doppleganger in a movie and becomes obsessed with tracking him down. After he does it seems like his very world and existence are called into the question. To say more would ruin the movie, though I'm not sure I could elaborate any further anyway. The film is frustratingly vague on specifics and provides no easy answers to its riddle, although I'm beginning to think it's true point is far more lofty then its Twilight Zone/Invasion of the Body Snatchers central idea would indicate. From what I've heard since seeing it, the breadcrumbs are there for those familiar with the source material, but I have a hard time seeing how the uninitiated wil be able to make heads or tails of it without first having a little context.
