I was extremely excited for Gone Girl. I was one of my most anticipated movies of the year and David Fincher is one of my all-time favourite directors. Well, how is it? Gone Girl is a total masterpiece. The story, without spoiling anything, follows Nick Dunne, a man who's wife has suddenly disappeared and he has been blamed for the murder... then trouble ensues. The story is not at all what I expected it to be. As a person who hasn't read the book yet, I had absolutely no clue what the twists were. And man, they were amazing. I'm actually really interested in reading the book now because of just how awesome the story was! One thing I loved about the story is that it wasn't just a "murder mystery" per-se. It was a social commentary on the media and on marriage in general. I found this very unique and it enhanced the movie to a whole other level. Gone Girl is also an extremely smart thriller, with brilliant twists that I did not see coming. Ben Affleck gives a great performance as Nick Dunne, but the obvious standout here is Rosamund Pike. She will be nominated and possibly win an Oscar for Best Actress. Yes, she's THAT good. The rest of the supporting cast totally nail their characters. Yes, even Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris do excellent jobs. The direction is... absolutely perfect. David Fincher proves once again that he is one of, if not THE best director working today! His shots are crafted to visual perfection. He uses lighting and sound in such an effective way. I don't think I could describe in words just how brilliant David Fincher is. The more I think about it, I'll say that Gone Girl is the second best Fincher film to date (I will always have a soft spot for Fight Club) This film is impeccably edited too. Like all of David Fincher's films (let's exclude Alien3 for now), the editing is amazing and creative. The musical score by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross is mysterious and thrilling. I think it may just be one of the best scores of the year. The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous in every way. Even when in a confined space, Fincher fills the screen with beauty. This is also one of the best written films of 2014 so far. For a nearly three hour-long movie filled with conversations, it never got boring once and felt half as long as it actually was. This wasn't only because of the writing, but also because of the perfect pace. The more I think about it, the more I love Gone Girl. I never use this word, but I think that Gone Girl is... flawless. I couldn't find a single fault or problem with this film! It not only lived up to my extreme hype, but it surpassed it! I urge you, please see Gone Girl ASAP. You will not regret it. I know I'll be rushing out to see it again soon! RATING: 10/10 - A perfect score!
