    Hate Crime

The writer and director of this movie aptly displays an unbalanced look at homophobia and makes Christians the bad guys. Wow is this guy in the dark or what. I can understand certain groups being fanatical and fundamentalists who lose the real grasp of Christianity. When practiced in its truest form this religion is a humble one and compassionate. The love of Christ is expressed to all of humanity. There is tons of the director/writer's own agenda going on here, especially when he juxtaposes the fire and brimstone preacher with the minister from a Jewish synogogue. If this moving was bashing any other religion like Muslims, they would be up in arms. Perhaps literaly. And of course that's ridiculous as well. Having said all that, perhaps the writer/director could benefit in film making by watching Dead Man Walking with Sean Penn where we see an equal balance between the two sides of the death penalty. The theatre was empty when I was there, thank God for that. Very one sided and distorted to make one side look innocent and cool. Perhaps that is the real hate crime, the making of this film.

I don't know what movie you were watching, but it wasn't the Hate Crime I saw. This movie makes a point of being balanced, hence the very scene you talk about with the two sermons. It isn't a Jewish synogogue in that scene, but a church of Christian denomination. Duh! How about, instead of all you defensive Christians out there trying to sweep extreme fundamentalism under the rug, why not speak out against it. You are the very people who should be outraged at those who use Christianity to justify their own hate and bigotry. Ask those who have murdered gay people, and most of them will answer that it was "God's will" or some other form of Bible-justifying reason. That is the truth. And wacko fundamentalists exist - stop denying it.

I don't know where this guy is coming from. I'm from Dallas, TX, and there are both types of churches all throughout Texas. I embrace how Stovall shows two of the sides of religion, and both are churches, not synogogues. It's not Christians vs. Jews. It's reality in today's times.

Reality in today's times are that Christians who practice their faith with love and compassion are the one who are made to look bad because of a few fundamentalist [...]. If you watch this movie again perhaps you will notice how the director goes overboard in trying to paint an innocent cool and groovy picture of the gay couple while having anyone who wears a cross in the movie become the bad guy. This is the problem. These types of movies are only the beginning and be rest assured Hollywood will jump on the band wagon full force because we know what Hollywood is. Peace in the valley Keemosabe!
