In the Heat of the Night

We're down in a racist U. S. South when a black detective from Philadelphia is called to the locale to help in the investigation of a murder. It's positively frightening what bigotry and hatred exist for the black person, but Mr. Tibbs ( Poitier) isn't going to take any of that guff from anyone. The southern, gum chewing racist sheriff (Oscar Winner Rod Steiger) is skeptical through most of the film. His interactions with his superior black officer from the north are incomparable. A great number of scenes stand out as Mr. Tibbs will take no abuse from anyone, even the most important man in the town. Canadian director Norman Jewison helmed this 1966 Oscar winning film. It was his bad luck that he did not get the director's prize, so richly deserved.
