I wonder if the title of this film is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the depravity of mankind. Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Selgado called human beings 'The Salt of the Earth'. Then, abetted by photographer and film director Wim Wenders, he opened this journey with a visit to the Brazilian gold mines. There we see individuals in a mad search for that most powerful of metals... gold! Selgado's photography is strikingly beautiful, yet his obsession with photographing the quest of man for power and his evil methods of applying it may leave the viewer numbstruck. I do not doubt the veracity of a single one of Selgado's observations and when the film concludes with a 'Hollywood happy' ending, I am pleased for the photographer. Yet the events he showed us still occur around the globe with no end in sight.
