Granted there is a very limited audience for these operatic gems from the past yet this vehicle for Jeannette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy is very pleasant for its gorgeous music which was first presented on Broadway. It is a bit weepy in a melodramatic plot, but as in Naughty Marietta and Rose Marie, it's all about the music and beautiful operatic numbers that once paved both Hollywood and the Great White Way. We get a look at John Barrymore in a supporting role while he was still sober enough to handle a role without cue cards.
