    Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

One must really tip their hat to Tom Cruise. I cannot recall any actor who puts it all on the line like he does. Yes that really is Cruise hanging on to the side of a plane as it ascends thousands of feet in the air. It is a simply breathtaking opening sequence, and one that exemplifies the actor's willingness to scale new heights of risk-taking insanity, all in an effort to get people into the theatre. Though not quite as relentlessly enjoyable as Ghost Protocol, MI:Rogue Nation is still a terrific action movie in its own right, which benefits greatly from writer/director Christopher McQuarrie's ability to craft an engaging narrative, even if "The Syndicate" is a glaring Spectre rip-off. A great cast is also a plus, with Renner, Pegg and Rhames returning, and Alec Baldwin adding a few great monologues to the proceedings as well. Though the award for best new cast member clearly goes to Rebecca Ferguson, her character far more than just another pretty face, and without a doubt, the most layered, well-drawn female character to appear in the franchise thus far. Like GP, the lack of major star power in the villain role hurts a little, but there is so much else to admire here that it's barely noticeable. A strong follow up to what was the best of the series. One that provides just the type of globe-trotting, stunt-filled lunacy, and over the top entertainment that summer audiences are looking for.
