    Prometheus

Prometheus surely has to be one of the most anticipated Sci-Fi films in recent memory, even more so due to the admission that it is in fact a semi-prequel to director Ridley Scott's legendary masterpiece Alien. This fact, coupled with a terrific trailer/marketing campaign had me eagerly awaiting this one. Sadly, on the whole, the film simply doesn't live up to the hype. First off, like most of Scott's work, it's visually breathtaking, especially in IMAX 3D. I'd even say if you're going to see it, try to see it in IMAX if at all possible, should really add to the experience. The cast too is a definite plus, anchored by excellent performances from Noomi Rapace and especially Michael Fassbender as the on-board synthetic. Yet where the film runs into trouble is the narrative. The script is weak, though it's not like Alien was Henry 5th or anything so that isn't really a huge concern, however the way certain events are explained and how certain "things" come to be just don't work. Now Alien had a sorta cheap B movie exploitation quality to it, but where Prometheus goes is more akin to laughable then anything else. I'm not giving it a bad review cause it was boring, cause it wasn't. [...] I'm giving it a negative review because of what it promised and ultimately didn't deliver. I was promised an exiting early chapter to a legendary series, what I got was a a so-so Sci-Fi entry that outside of a couple of cool scenes and the last 30 seconds has very little resemblance to the franchise that I love. I knew going in that this wouldn't be Alien or Aliens but I was hoping for more than I got. Very disappointing.

Nice review. You have mirrored my sentiments (and score) exactly. My personal review is not posted as yet, but yours is more eloquent. I might add that for a sci-fi movie that the lead female gave an almost Academy-worthy performance. Her "surgery" scene was a truly remarkable performance. But sadly the rest of the movie took a few short cuts.

Man I thought 42 was a lot of reviews!! Thanks for the kind words in any case, we seem to agree/hate most of the same films. Always respect the opinion of people who think like I do!! But gotta call you out on Shutter Island. A ten really? Scorcese's a god to me, don't get me wrong I own pretty much all of his films, but not this one. Your insightful review and keen eye taught me a lot bout the film I failed to pick up on which is why I find it hard to believe that you, like me, didn't realize he was crazy from the opening scene. Knew it right away, kept hoping it would go a different way, never did. Completely spoiled the suspense, so much so that I obviously missed a great many visual treats along the way. Might watch it a second time, but hey to each his own.

I have watched Shutter a dozen times or more and get more each time I view it. You could almost watch the film with NO sound and enjoy the wealth of visual treasures throughout. You are always given a "cue" by the director before every single reverie of DiCaprio. Often it is done as floating objects, or streaming red somewhere. His visit in the cave with the female was a dream- Why do we know this? Just before he entered the cave-- the rats-swarming near the water's edge?!? Rats would never be near water when they could escape to higher ground. Throughout the movie the use of color contrast was compelling. Using a match to light his way through the cell block... And that one single moment when he is in the water holding his dead children. How does the camera catch this ultimate pain (And his mental breaking point in life. And that was the crystalizing/breaking point in his life. And yes we all knew he was crazy but the question is: When did he know it? Listen to his final words in the film once again. Nice chatting. Pat.
