    Rome, Open City

Perhaps the first great Italian Neo-Realismo Film to which foreigners were introduced way back in 1945. The film by Rossellini caused a sensation world wide as they saw a feature filmed in the streets of Rome in black and white, all highlighting the final events of WW II and the disastrous consequences that persisted with ordinary Romans. Anna Magnani made a huge splash in the international press for a performance that seemed real as life itself. Alfredo Fabrizi was in top form as well as the priest.

European Films, especially Italian ones were raising eyebrows all during the late 40's and early fifties so that a special Honourary Oscar was given for the Best Foreign Film of the Year! Some of the early winners of the Honourary Oscar were PAISAN, a heartbreaking story, Shiushine from Vittorio De Sica also took an honorary Oscar. By 1954 there was a new award introduced by the Academy... Best Foreign Language Film, with countries sending their top film to be judged by the Academy. The Films sent (in 2015 - there were 76) are viewed by special committee only and they come up with various shortlists. The second last one is a shortlist of the nine final films still in competition. That number is brought down to 5 the day The Academy Awards Nominations are announced in late January.
