I enjoyed this film immensely. It is rather understated in presentation, but the plot is strong and becomes ever more engrossing as the connections between the different plot lines are revealed. In my interpretation (and perhaps everyone else has their own), P. J. Travers, through the story of Mary Poppins, was trying to protect the memories of her father, who loved her very much but who was unsuccessful as a banker and eventually died of tuberculosis. But she needs money, and so she agrees to go to Hollywood to discuss a film adaptation of her story. But it takes a long time to break through her defences, and the crux of the story is the depiction of how Walt Disney did this, and by doing so helped Travers come to terms with her past. Emma Thompson is absolutely terrific in the title role (Oscar material?), ably supported by Tom Hanks as Walt Disney, Colin Farrell as Travers Golf, and Annie Rose Buckley as the young P. J. Travers.
