    The Big Country

I would categorize THE BIG COUNTRY as one of the greatest epic westerns ever filmed, strangely from 3 time Oscar Winning Director William Wyler, who had never made a western before. With Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Jean Simmons and Carol Baker the cast is as solid as can be. However, in this plot of dueling ranch barons Charles Bickford gets an honourable mention. It is, however, BURL IVES who literally steals the film from everyone with the perfection of his acting, a role that won him Best Supporting Actor of 1958. You won't often see a performance of this high calibre. 1958 also saw Mr. Ives as BIG DADDY in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, another Oscar Worthy Winning Role. Too bad both films were released in 1958.
