A brilliant adaptation of the original Broadway play filmed for 1959. The story of Anne Frank is known by all so the plotline holds no surprises. Even so, director George Stevens is able to imbue the film with a suspense that keeps you on your toes throughout the film. The life of the Jewish attic inhabitants is made up of magnificent stars giving staggering performances, SHELLEY WINTERS winning the first of her two Oscars as Mrs. Van Damm. The B & W cinematography is stunning and adds greatly to the ambiance of this horrific tragedy. At almost three hours, it's a long film but it's so human that it captivates the viewer from start to finish. This adaptation is an absolute must see film. 10+
