This is an action movie and should not be confused with a truly historical fiction. Yes there were Roman soldiers. Yes they were in Britain for a couple of centuries. Yes there is a Hadrian wall. But that’s where historic accuracy stops. The cinematography was the strength of the movie as the assorted landscapes were well chosen. The Roman costumes were also well designed. The director intentionally steered away from graphic violence. With a number of fight scenes, rarely do you see any gore. Unfortunately, the fight scenes were disappointing, as they tended to be intentionally blurred and “strobe-like”. These two factors made the fight scenes far too dull and uninteresting. The basic story is all too predictable as a son seeks redemption for his father’s shame. How this is done, is all too convenient. Of all the tribes living in the island of Great Britain, guess which one captures the lead character? The final fight scene , like the other fight scenes, is poorly choreographed. Guess which two characters end up fighting each other, in the midst of dozens of other fighters? And guess who wins? There are far too many gaps in logic as well. I cannot imagine any tribes who live in “Scotland” who would not wear shirts. And for a person to take cover in a Scottish stream for any length of time has never been in a Scottish stream…can you say hypothermia? Why not take refuge in a cave? This is not even a renter.
