    The Karate Kid

There's nothing charming about a child actor playing someone older than himself, who is scripted to act older than character, all in order to please the pressuring parents. Jayden's swaggering and anxious looks after his athletic moves say it all. I was also disappointed with the attitude towards women in the movie: the "12-year old" son bodily drags his unwilling mother and girlfriend to various "fun" locations, and the girlfriend's musical achievement is used as a climax-builder without the audience ever learning the outcome of her violin audition. Finally, the kung fu practice on the Great Wall of China lacked context and pulled the rest of the scenes down to the level of coach bus tourism.

Although this film was not genius it had its moments for its family directed audience. My issue is that a person who reviews Bride Wars with a 10/10 and references it as “an empowering movie for women" (obviously you are confusing empowering with demeaning) and then goes onto call, one of the best films of the year, A Single Man, which you reviewed as a 2/10," contrived, stagnant and overdone" should not continue to review films on this website. You are potentially ruining the unknowing film goer a chance to actually go out and see true cinema. By you condoning, rather heralding, such films as Four Christmases, Bride Wars, Killers, Date Night and maligning such films as The Last Station, The Dark Knight, A Single Man, and The Imaginarium if Doctor Parnassus your are guilty of creating the marketplace for truly awful films and are one of the millions that can be thanked for why we are unable to see creative and enjoyable films consistently in the mainstream. And next time you insist on using the phrase “empowering movie for women” please consider revisiting Betty Freidan or Jessica Valenti for some perspective.

Also, you might enjoy reading up on the Bechdel Test for Women, or checking out a short you-tube video if you prefer to watch.
