    The Monuments Men

George Clooney is about the only Hollywood actor, director, writer who gives a damned about history and is not afraid to do something about it. With his remake for television of the Cold War movie Fail Safe; or starring in Gravity or the Perfect Storm, or Up In the Air, I think that we can expect only the most serious subjects to be covered although Clooney has had his fair share of flops, comedy, drama, music and so on. This movie is for those who know something about art, who love art and art history although the cast is okay too. Ironically, the Nazis and Hitler were failures in every respect, certainly in a way that was fundamentally flawed and ignorant of art history, no doubt failures in all the ways that Clooney is a success today, if such a thing can be said. Think about it. Hitler never got his opportunity to destroy all that art with his scorched Earth policy as he directed, although apparently some of it was burned. Millions of pieces were recovered apparently with much of it returned to the rightful owners. That in itself is pretty remarkable when you consider that to the victors go the spoils of war. Well, not in this case. I recommend this movie for those who love irony in a movie and this movie has plenty of it. For instance, isn't it odd that Hitler wanted all that art for his 1000 Year Reich but had not the slightest idea what he'd do with it when the war was over, if he won that is, so he stashed everything in salt and copper mines? Just plain weird. What was he supposed to do if he won, display all of that art made by what he considered to be inferior people in his superior museums, gallery's and so on, art that reminded him of the very civilization he detested and wanted to destroy, a decadent civilization he railed against soon to be replaced by his super race of blue-eyed blond haired racist and morally upright iron men and women? There is no logic to his thinking, only chaos. I'm glad that this movie was made, we need to know that era of history, not for entertainment purposes of course but because it shows us what dictators and despots are made of, full of lies, hatred, and greed, pretty thin stuff to try to build a civilization upon and yet people even today will follow this kind of insanity, this type of individual. We are seeing it everyday in Iran, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea, Sudan, Venezuela... wherever people are ruled by despots. Will we ever learn? Clooney most likely thinks not, but he is helping us -- to learn.

I enjoyed reading your review. If you do not write articles or stories for a living you are sadly cheating yourself and the reading population. I agree that greed unchecked is madness in its most evil form. Good on you.

Compared to other directors today George Clooney is an amateur director and okay actor. He has had flops also. Saving art is important. Saving lives is more important. You don't need Clooney to make a movie to tell us that Hitler was evil. What he did to art is nothing compared to the lives that were lost.
