This film was much better than I expected; the descriptions and summaries that I had read previously suggested a glorified soap opera. But the gist of the story is two emotionally fragile young people, Pat and Tiffany, meeting and learning to depend on each other to recover from psychological trauma. But the film has way too many plot lines, and in that sense deserves the soap opera label. For example, the fact that Pat's father, played by Robert De Niro, has turned to book-making in order to restore his financial fortunes is a serious distraction. But Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence are excellent as the two young protagonists trying to reestablish their emotional bearings, and Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver are also excellent in their roles as Pat's concerned parents.
