    The Theory of Everything

The Theory of Everything is a tricky movie to review. While there is so much I loved about it, there are a few glaring problems that are hard to ignore. So while I enjoyed it more that any other movie I would give a 7 out of 10, I have to address the film's issues, but not before giving praise where praise is due. Eddie Redmayne delivers an outstanding performance as Stephen Hawking; probably the best performance I have seen all year (all year counting as 2014, as that is the year this film was released) I was absolutely blown away at how accurate and heartfelt it was, and utterly heartbroken at its sadness and brutal realism. Whether or not Redmayne takes home the Oscar this year, I believe he is fully deserving of it. While the lead performance absolutely steals the movie, the rest of the cast portray their roles with such believability and precision, they are able to avoid falling into the shadow of Eddie Redmayne's performance, and really stand on their own. The story of Stephen Hawking is a sad, yet extremely hopeful one. Not only is Hawking arguably the most intelligent man alive, but he has defied all expectations medically. This film does a great job at portraying this never ending struggle while showcasing everyone in Prof. Hawking's life that helped him get to where he is today, particularly Felicity Jones' character. The movie paints such a vivid picture of life and the ability to overcome obstacles, that it could be easy to miss the fact that the film has some problems; particularly the occasional inability to clearly convey aspects in the life of Stephen Hawking, that it takes further research to actually understand what happened and why. In these particular aspects, the film almost renders itself shallow, and fails to explore any deeper meaning to the cause of events. Also, towards the second half, the film becomes more of a narrative than a story. It tries to pick up the pace in order to cover more of Hawking's life, but to its detriment, looses the time it once gave itself to develop a story around the plot points. These issues however, did not adversely affect my overall enjoyment of the film as I was able to appreciate the many things it did right, such as the acting, story, and realistic emotional pull. It isn't the best movie available right now, but it is definitely worth watching.
