Transcendence holds a horrible 18% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been getting absolutely awful reviews. This saddened me initially because the trailers were excellent and I love the premise and the actors involved. Well, my curiosity beat out my brain and I went to see Transcendence with very low expectations this afternoon. Well, this movie does not deserve the terrible reviews it's receiving. That being said, there were many problems with this interesting yet sadly not great film. The acting in this movie is mostly quite good. Morgan Freeman and Kate Mara did excellent jobs and Paul Bettany also did quite good. Unfortunately, though, Johnny Depp was honestly pretty stale. He seemed like a computer before he even became one. His character was stale and boring. The story is the main problem here. It is super interesting and really cool for the first half. The second half and the ending were very weird and not well done. I expected a slightly different way for the story to go, which would have been much better. Another one of the movie's big problems is the writing. Some of the dialogue was so cheesy and so badly done that I was giggling in the theatre. There were also countless plot-holes and the story moved at a very slow pace. There were some boring and slow moments and the way the story was told was messy. However, the reason this movie gets a positive review is because of the ideas it presents, the amazing score and the gorgeous cinematography. This movie had oh so much potential. Some of the cool ideas the movie brings forth are thought-provoking and smart. The actors all try hard in their roles and work the best they can with the awful script. OVERALL: Transcendence is a very disappointing, yet not horrible film that is actually worth seeing if you are interested in the idea. Rent it. RATING: 6.25/10.
