Spielberg can be very good (Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List) or very bad (Hook, 1941) and on the whole he's been very good but War Horse fits the later category. Yes there are some very stirring sequences but overall it was meh. The English scenes in particular reeked of obvious set construction and the lighting was noticeably artificial (multiple shadows) And of course there had to be a kid in the movie, an often cloying Spielbergism that features in even his better work. And those various uneven German and French accents; sub-titles would have been better. In the end hats off to the horse; he was the best actor by far.

Right on, karcjh, good review, my feelings exactly. (Except the best actors were the 14 horses who played Joey)
