The 1954 A Star is Born is an exquisite film on every level. It's a serious drama with song and dance numbers by Judy Garland. Show business is the name of the game here with a wife surpassing her star husband in status. It's very raw and emotional with James Mason doing what he does best and Judy Garland giving an Oscar Nominated performance. What's great about the restored version on DVD is that 20 minutes have been added to the original theatrical release from 1954. Judy truly should have won the Oscar or an Oscar for all the great roles in her career. It is said that MGM, her former studio, didn't want her to win and made that very public. Judy made the extravaganza at Warner Bros. She was again nominated in a supporting role this time round in 1961 in a fully dramatic role in Judgement at Nurnberg but lost to Rita Moreno. The great George Cukor directed this second remake of A Star is Born. The third remake is the Barbra Streisand Chris Christoferson version.
