Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

With all of the sequels released, people forget the entertainment value of “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl”. This is swashbuckling at its best with romance, action, fantasy, horror, and humor weaved together with plenty of memorable moments to keep you coming back for more.

Blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) calls upon pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) to rescue his beloved Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) The governor’s daughter has been abducted by the cursed crew of the "Black Pearl", whose black sails leave death in their wake.

At 142 minutes long, “PotC” is lengthy, but what would you cut? It hooks you in with the love triangle and the splendid sets/costumes. Will beautiful Elizabeth choose her childhood friend Turner, or the rich and noble Commodore James Norrington (Jack Davenport)? Before you can figure it out, here comes Johnny Depp in an unforgettable performance, leading us into swordfights, naval battles, shootouts, chases and one grandiose sequence after another. Instantly, you know he’s something special. Not only because he’s got one of the greatest introductions ever put on film, but also because of his dialogue, his look and, most importantly, his mannerisms. Others have tried, but there’s nothing else like it out there. Once you see his Oscar-nominated performance, you'll never forget it.

To peel your eyes away from Captain Jack would be unthinkable... until we meet getting better and better once we meet the chief villain: Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbosa. In the hands of anyone else, the captain of the "Black Pearl" would’ve been one-dimensional. Here? He’s charismatic despite being dirty and grimy. He’s intelligent, tragic, and ruthless. He makes you smile that crooked smile you get when a diabolical idea crosses your mind. Then, he brings you chills.

Everyone on-screen is well defined and richly textured. You’ll find yourself looking forward to “that pirate who loves throwing bombs” or the comedy duo with that one pirate who has a wooden eye. You sense that this is just a glimpse at the world, just the biggest and grandest of countless adventures. You’re having fun, but the film doesn’t turn pirates into cuddly little animals. There’s bloodshed, tension and legitimately frightening scenes found throughout. The cursed buccaneers aboard the Black Pearl are lusty throat cutters who pillage, raid and plunder with glee. When our heroes draw their swords, you get excited. The stakes are real.

The screenplay by Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio and the direction by Gore Verbinski work in perfect unison. With the abundant humor (there are many, many great lines found throughout) and that core of romance and nobility, you’ll want to watch it over and over. I can't do “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” justice simply by describing it. When you watch it, stay until the end of the credits for a bonus scene.
