A very great drama on every level with so many wonderful references to old Hollywood. William Holden's "golden boy" gigolo comes in for some sharp harangues with ex silent movie siren Norma Desmond. This is such a perfect "noir" with so many compelling scenes that create an ambiance that could never be re-produced today. As good as Gloria Swanson is in the role, she overacts on several occasions. That bothered me a mite. The one overacted brilliant scene is the finale in which she retrieves into silent film role style acting. Torn between an 8 and a 9. I can overlook Swanson's jests in the silent film mode.
