    The Pretender

For 1947, this is an astonishing film on so many levels. The premise may sound pedestrian but the consequences of certain actions by a greedy man has its extremely dark, chaotic consequences. It was made by then Republic Pictures, an independent studio in Hollywood, almost certain no major Hollywood studio wanted to handle this subject matter. The suspense is top notch and lead actor Albert Dekker has never ever been better. Paul Dessau's score creates an enormous wallop in the film, its impact incredible for a 1947 feature. The masterful cinematography comes via John Alton and will leave you spellbound. Visit this old masterpiece, a Wilder production, but not the famous Billy.
