    The Sheltering Sky

The vast emptiness of North Africa's Sahara desert is the setting for this bizarre little tale involving an American couple of questionable moral standards who are adrift in a world unknown to western sensibilities in the early 1900's. Debra Winger gives a convincing performance of a woman who is in a state of loss, explores the life of a nomadic Tuareg tribesman when she becomes his lover. John Malkovich gives a credible performance as the jilted, sickly husband. Haunting images of the desert make this offbeat tale a movie not to miss.
