    The Suspect

This fine thriller (1944) from famed Hollywood director Robert Siodmak has Charles Laughton in a decidedly wicked role as an early twentieth century married shopkeeper with wicked ideas up his sleeve. His unlikely meeting with a working girl changes his entire life as he contemplates the road he must take. Charles Laughton, a solid character actor, gets to stretch his muscles in an unusual way in The Suspect. Well known actor of the era Ella Raines is the female lead while Stanley C. Ridges is in fine fettle as a police inspector only too eager to investigate his cases. There has been a silent version of this film and one that followed the 1944 Siodmak release. When kept from hamming it up, Mr. Laughton could be a very superior actor.
