The excellence of this movie should be primarily attributed to the director – Liev Schreiber. I am from Russia myself (the culture of Ukraine and Russia is almost identical), and I was amazed by how well the director (who, to my astonishment as I found out later, was born and raised in the US) captured the culture of the country, even in a slightly satirical way. The success of this film wouldn’t have been without the great play by actors, especially Eugene Hutz, who in my opinion, portrayed a typical type of an Ukrainian. The plot could have been a little more twisted, but the subject was profound and emotional.
