My first encounter with Matt Scudder proved to be a very special experience. A Walk Among the Tombstones has a thrilling plot all taking place in New York City of 1999. The film was so well shot I hardly recognized familiar locations. Liam Neeson makes an excellent Scudder and the underbelly characters of drugs and crime are more than competent. I truly don't understand all the negative feelings toward this film. So many complained about predictability of plot and character. I just wrote off those reviews as nonsense. It is important to remember that the action of the film takes place during Giuliani's years as mayor of New York, a time when city officials did a great job in cleaning up New York almost to spic n'span. And then we get this caper which makes us stand up and take notice. The final shot of the movie deliberately shows a panoramic view of the city with the Twin Towers intact. This has nothing to do with the Scudder plot... only to make the viewer realize that worse things will be happening in the city! Well written and directed crime drama! I re-saw TOMBSTONES on DVD and was still pleased with the over-all experience.
