A film noir beautifully directed by Edward Dmytryk from RKO just before the boom was lowered by the United States against sympathetic views on Communism or Communist Card holding members. Dmytryk was caught in the "crossfire" and didn't work again for many years.
In 'CROSSFIRE', we have what is the first major film along with 'Gentleman's Agreement' dealing with anti-Semitic propaganda, very brave for the studio to make. It is a very dark piece about evading justice for the murder of a member of a minority faith and race. It has consequences we don't expect as someone is willing to stick out his neck for justice. Crossfire was nominated for a slew of Oscars in 1947 but with two anti-Semitic pictures in the race for best picture, Crossfire had to settle for second best to the Oscar Winning Film 'Gentleman's Agreement'. It truly is a great picture and possibly surpasses Gentleman's Agreement with the passing years.
